2015 is looking exciting for the construction industry. Growth continues at an impressive rate and everywhere you look there are new developments (largely housing) leading the way. BIM adoption is on the up and has risen from 13% adoption in 2013 to 54% adoption in 2014. With awareness almost universal (95%) it is not long before we begin to see the true benefits of collaboration using BIM methodologies (visit this link for more information).

At TDS Midlands we have always been proactive in using BIM, as evidenced by the Chiswick Park development we were part of. This project exceeded level 2 compliance and was nominated or a Tekla award. Have a look at the video here.

Skill shortages within the industry is a big challenge; one that is effectively crippling the industry and it’s ability to grow sustainably. If you play this forward, it is only a matter of time before we lose our heritage in this field and the skills get outsourced to different countries, or as is happening now, foreign skills are commanding much higher prices, up to £1,000 a week for foreign bricklayers for example.

We passionately believe that it is the responsibility of the industry to make sure the skills are developed. And when we say the industry, we mean each and every company within it. The TDS Academy was created to train apprentices in steelwork detailing and draughting; the only one in the country and already proving very popular. With a unique training programme to ensure apprentices are capable from day one, and funding available that means apprentices are effectively free to employers, there is every reason to support our construction legacy, the industry and your business growth: Find out more about apprenticeship benefits to your company here.

Finally, carbon footprints and environmental focus; we fully expect this to be high on the agenda next year and have big plans. Watch this space to find out how we are doing our bit to fight the carbon footprint issue.

We have had a fantastic 2014 and would like to thank everyone who has been part of it. Some of the projects we have been involved with are below so take a look. We very much look forward to another exciting year in 2015.

Have a good Christmas and a very healthy, happy and prosperous 2015.
